Food Certifications Guide
Organic
Organic labels are used for food/food made with produce from the dirty dozen list. They consist of fruits and veggies like: kale, cherries, berries, apples and others. When possible, try to get the food organic to avoid the excess pesticides.
Non-GMO
Mainly, whenever there is a food made from soy or corn. Soy and corn are from the most genetically modified plants out there. Remember this rule: If a food is certified “organic”, it is also Non-GMO.
Fair Trade
Fair Trade is not a label that specially affects the health of the food. Fair trade protects the rights of workers by giving them safer working conditions and better payment.
Cage Free, Free Range or Pasture Raised
Cage Free, Free Range, or Pasture Raised apply mainly to eggs. These labels refers to the chicken’s living environment. The health of the chicken effects the health of the eggs it makes.
Grass-Fed
The Grass-fed label is necessary for any food product that comes from a cow. This includes dairy products like milk, butter, cheese and yogurt. It also includes beef and meat. Grass-fed refers to the living conditions of the cow.
Certified B Corporations
Certified B Corporations is a label given to food companies that have a social mission as well. It does not affect the health of the food.
Paleo, Keto, Gluten Free or Vegan
Paleo, Keto, Gluten Free or Vegan is a lifestyle some people live. Gluten free would be not eating gluten (wheat). Paleo is eating foods that our ancestors ate years ago before farming and processing of foods occurred. Keto is controlling the amount of carbs and eating more fats
