Having Willpower and not being impulsive is the key to achieving a spiritual life. We see this concept in the Gemara in Masechet Ketuvot. Rabbein Hakadosh, the author of the of the Mishnayot, was very wealthy. Before he died, he raised his hand and said that with all that that he had, he never indulged with pleasure of earing. 

Be Careful With Indulging

Tosfot connects this medrash to the story. The medrash says, until a person prays that he should  remember and understand the Torah in depth, he should pray that he’d have self control of not indulging food. From here we see that the condition to excel in the Torah is to have self control.
